No matter how many weddings I do, I confess that I still get teary-eyed every now and again. I still get emotional when I witness vows, I still laugh at the tiny mishaps and funny moments that happen in every wedding (even the best weddings have little bobbles that make it unique), and I still feel a sense of honor in being included in every couple’s monumental wedding day. It’s a sincere privilege, and it never, ever gets old. One of the best moments I ever witness is that amazing first look. The moment when the bride or groom sees their partner is always a tear jerker, and one of the most emotional, meaningful minutes of the day. For just a moment, the world sort of stops. I love it! Here are some tips for a truly amazing first look, so take note, brides and grooms:
-Put your personal belongings with your bridal party before your first look: You don’t want to be holding your cell phone, lipstick, keys, or champagne during your first look moments, so be sure to hand them off to someone responsible.
-Make plenty of space in the day for this moment: Don’t allow just 5-10 minutes for this incredible time in your wedding day. Be sure to tell your photographer clearly just how much time you have allotted, and don’t rush anything! It is nice to add in a favorite song or even have your musicians play something beautiful as you proceed to your spouse-to-be…it makes the moment even more powerful, especially if you have a videographer who can include the music.
-Soak up the time: Your wedding day will be a blur. Even the most highly-planned, curated days pass far too quickly, and most couples lament that they didn’t have a single moment that was just for them. Yes, your wedding day is for you both, but it’s also for your loved ones, and any true moments to be still are often overshadowed by the schedule for the day, or even hustling off to the reception. Doing a first look gives you a tiny window of time where you have space to cry, laugh, and shake off the nerves. Soak it up!
